John U. Lloyd State Park

Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park, formerly, John U. Lloyd is a Florida state park open 365 days a year located in Dania Beach.  The park offers access to a beautiful beach front with over 2-miles of shoreline.  You can spend the day swimming, snorkeling, surf fishing, or doing shore dives in your scuba gear.  There are about 300 picnic areas for free use if they are available.  There are 7 pavillions that may be rented for the day that either are near the beach or face Port Everglades where you can see the huge cruise ships sail in and out.  Bring your bike to enjoy over 2 miles of a paved path or take a nature hike thru a 45-minute self-guided walk thru coastal hammocks.

Boating can be wonderful from John U Lloyd.  You can use the boat ramp for a $9 fee and have access to the Intracoastal Water and, a mile later, inlet access to the Atlantic Ocean.  The Whiskey Creek, a manatee sanctuary, flows through the park and is adjacent to Port Everglades and the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) so the chance to see some Florida wildlife is good.  If you do not have your own boat, you can rent kayaks and canoes from the onsite snack bar/restaurant.

***On July 1, 2016, this park was renamed Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park in honor of two individuals who led efforts to change the “colored beach” into a state park in 1973 and create appropriate access to that beach for residents.***
