Accessible South Florida: Barrier Free Family Recreation

Family recreation in South Florida is available to all regardless of ability.  Beaches across the area have beach wheelchairs, pools have chair lifts and playgrounds now are being built with ramps so that the entire family can participate in play!  South Florida Finds wanted to make a list of some wonderful places to go with the whole family so that no one feels left out. We realize that sometimes a parent, grandparent, aunt/uncle or child with different abilities may feel challenged to locate places to go with friends and family.  Have fun exploring some of these wonderful options!

Accessible Beaches


Palm Beach County

1) Delray Municipal Beach: Located at South Ocean Boulevard, the Delray Municipal Beach is not just one of the most beautiful in south Florida region, but also one of the most accessible for differently abled people. The beach features a raised covered pavilion, a wooden walkway, and an an extended observation deck providing spectacular views of the Atlantic ocean. There's a handicap parking available next to these amenities, and, across the Atlantic Avenue, there is a brand new accessible restroom facility at Sarah Gleason park. There are also surf chairs available for the physically challenged, free of cost, on a first come first serve basis. 

2) RG Kreusler Park: Located at 2882 South Ocean Boulevard, the RG Kreusler Beach provides beach surf wheelchair facilities to the differently abled. The handicap access and the wheelchair facility can be availed of at the southern end of the Kreusler Park, at Lake Worth beach. 

3) South Inlet Park: Located at 1100 South Ocean Boulevard in Boca Raton, the beach at South Inlet Park provides beach surf wheelchair facility to the physically challenged. Visitors should contact a lifeguard to arrange for its use. 

4) Carlin Park: Located in Jupiter, the beach at Carlin Park provides beach surf wheelchair facility to the physically challenged. Visitors should contact a lifeguard to arrange for its use. 

5) Ocean Reef Park: Located in Riviera Beach, the beach at Ocean Reef Park provides beach surf wheelchair facility to the physically challenged. Visitors should contact a lifeguard to arrange for its use. 
 

Miami Dade County


1) Crandon Park Beach: Located in Key Biscayne, Crandon Park Beach offers beach wheelchairs that are custom designed for sandy surface, and provide easy maneuverability. However, these wheelchairs are made available on a first come, first serve basis, so it is advisable that you call ahead to make sure you do not miss out.

2) Haulover Beach: Located in Miami Beach, visitors can avail of wheelchair facility for the disabled at this beach. Once again, you should take care to call ahead, as these chairs are made available on a first come first serve basis. 

3) Miami Beach: The city of Miami Beach provides both motorized and manual beach wheelchairs to visitors through out the year. These wheelchairs are available at 1001 Ocean Drive and South Pointe Park, and visitors desirous of availing the facility should pick them up at the earliest as they are made available on a first come, first serve basis. While the manual wheelchairs can enter water up to 6 inches deep, the motorized wheelchairs are suited only for land. 

4) Sunny Isles Beach Pier Park: Located at Collins Avenue, the beach at this Park has accessible restroom and shower facilities and provides wheelchairs on a first come, first serve basis.

5) Virginia Key Beach Park: Located at north end of Arthur Lamb Jr. Road, the beach here has accessible restroom and shower, with wheelchairs available on a first come first serve basis. 
 

Broward County

Fort Lauderdale Beach Park: Another city beach in Fort Lauderdale where handicapped visitors can avail of a range of facilities including accessible restrooms, accessible showers, accessible parking and accessible picnic tables and grills. 
 

Monroe County

1) Higgs Beach in Key West: Compliant with ADA guidelines, the Higgs Beach offers accessible shower and restroom facilities to visitors along with manual beach wheelchairs. 
2) Sunset Point Park: Located in Key Largo, the beach at Sunset Point Park offers beach wheelchairs to visitors on a first come, first serve basis. 
3) Burr Beach: Located in Tavernier, the Burr beach has manual wheel chairs available to visitors on a first come, first serve basis. 

Accessible Pools


Miami Dade County

1) Victory Pool Family Aquatics Center: Located in North Miami Beach, Victory Pool Aquatics Center is an ADA compliant facility with wheelchair ramp. 
2) Charles Hadley Aquatics Complex: Located at 12 NW 12th Avenue in the city of Miami, Charles Hadley Aquatics Center is an ADA compliant facility with dedicated ramps to enter and exit the pool.
3) Shenandoah Park: Located in the city of Miami, Shenandoah Park features a wading pool and dedicated ramps for the physically challenged. 
4) Grapeland Water Park: Located in the city of Miami, Grapeland water park is fully compliant with ADA requirements and welcomes people with special needs at its 4 recreational pools.

Broward County

1) Tropical Splash Water Park: Located in Lauderhill, Tropical Splash Water Park has an ADA compliant and fully accessible instructional pool for people with special needs.
2) Plantation Aquatic Complex: Located in the city of Plantation, the aquatic complex is an ADA compliant venue with wheelchair accessibility. 
3) Driftwood Community Pool: Located in the city of Hollywood, Driftwood Community Pool has zero depth entry for the physically challenged. The pool also features four swim lifts on the four foot depth marker. 
4) Lauderdale Lakes Swimming Complex: Located in the city of Lauderdale Lakes, this swimming complex is an ADA compliant facility with dedicated ramps for differently abled visitors. 

Monroe County

1) Jacob's Aquatics Center: Located in Key Largo, Jacob's Aquatics Center has a zero depth, beach style entry for the physically challenged as well as a ramp accessible pool. 

2) Founders Park: Located in Islamorada, the swimming pool is a partially ADA compliant facility with ramps for disabled visitors. 

3) MLK Community Pool: Located in Key West, MLK Community Pool is an ADA compliant facility with dedicated ramps for physically challenged visitors.

Palm Beach County

1) Swim Center: Located in the city of Boca Raton, Swim Center is a fully ADA compliant venue with a special aquatic chair lift and staff members who possess Special Needs Water Certification to assist disabled visitors. 

2) George Rothman Aquatics Center: Located in Palm Beach Gardens, the pool at George Rothman Aquatics Center features a zero depth beachfront entry for physically handicapped visitors. 

3) Pompey Park Pool: Located in Delray Beach, the Pompey Park Pool boasts of full ADA compliance. The swim lift II at the pool is a state-of-the-art lift that provides a smooth ride during entering or exiting the pool. The pool also has a wheel chair facility that makes showering, and dressing convenient for the physically challenged. 

Barrier free playgrounds


Miami Dade County

1) South Pointe Park: Located in Miami Beach, South Pointe Park is a boundless venue enabling children of all abilities to enjoy the facilities there including handicap accessible swing.

2) Perrine Park: Located in Palmetto Bay, this 27 acres park has barrier free playgrounds enabling kids of all abilities to enjoy its facilities. 

3) Unity Park: Located in the city of Miami, Unity Park provides complete access to children with disabilities with its thoughtful, barrier free layout. 

4) Jorge Mas Canosa Park: Located in the city of Miami, this park provides invaluable recreational opportunities to differently abled kids in the area with its barrier free design. 

Broward County


1) Willie Webb Park: Located in Lauderdale Lakes, the Willie Webb park, spread of 13 acres of land, has a barrier free play environment so that children of all abilities can enjoy themselves together.

2) Mills Pond Park: Located in the city of Fort Lauderdale, the massive Mills Pond Park, spread well over 130 acres of land, provides a barrier free play area to users, enabling an inclusive recreational environment. 

3) Florence C Hardy Park: Located in the city of Fort Lauderdale, this park is a compact facility with a 30,000 square feet of barrier free play area. 

4) Vista View Park: Located in the town of Davie, this sprawling park, spread over 272 acres of land, has a large playground with a universal access. 

Palm Beach

1) Congress Avenue Barrier Free Park: Located in Boynton Beach, this park has three universal access playgrounds, enabling people of all abilities to enjoy recreational facilities together. The park also has an outdoor exercise facility with almost half a dozen exercise equipment being wheelchair accessible. 

2) Scott's Place Playground in Wellington: Christened after Scott Williamson who passed away, aged six, due to cerebral palsy, the park is a truly state-of-the-art facility for differently abled kids. Not only does it have boundless playgrounds, but also features fully accessible playground equipment, such as slides, swings etcetera. 

3) Burt Aaronson South County Regional Park: Located in Boca Raton, this massive, multi-purpose park features a large, fully accessible playground that has been thoughtfully designed with differently abled children in mind. 

4) PGA National Park: Located in Palm Beach Gardens, this popular park features a barrier free playground enabling children of all abilities to enjoy themselves together. 

5) Lake Ida West: Located in Delray Beach, this picturesque park boasts of a boundless play area with dedicated play equipment for children with special needs. 

Monroe County

1) Waterloo Park: Located in Monroe Township, this 9 acres park boasts of a range of facilities for the physically handicapped including paved pathways, barrier free playgrounds, and accessible exercise equipment.
