Oleta River State Park

Body

Oleta River State Park is located in North Miami on eastern 163rd street.  This area was once inhabited by the ancient Tequesta people almost 3,000 years ago.  Today, this protected area is home to a large preserve of mangrove forest, native wildlife and plants.  This state park consists of about 1,000 acres and is the largest state park in Florida located in an urban area.

Come out to Oleta River to enjoy miles of off-road bicycling trails, canoeing, kayaking, or swim at their long sandy beach.  Please be aware that the swimming is not guarded by the state so swim at your own risk.  Fishing is allowed at the fishing pier located on the Intracoastal waterway on the eastern side of the park.  Bring some food to cook and use the park's picnic tables and grills.  There are nine pavilions that may also be reserved for a fee.   All pavilions have water, and the largest one has electricity.  The Blue Moon Outdoor Center is open from 9:00 a.m. until 1-1/2 hours before sunset. The concession rents canoes, kayaks, stand up paddleboards, and mountain bikes. The store has general merchandise, bait and snack items.   If you don't want to bother with toting in your own food, than enjoy some prepared foods just outside the park at the Blue Marlin FIsh House, 2500 NE 163rd Street.

If you are interested in staying the night at Oleta River, you must reserve as a non-profit youth group.  The facilities include several air-conditioned cabins with restrooms located nearby.  One of the cabins is ADA-Acessbile.  LInens are not provided and there is no kitchen in the cabins.

Every weekend you can enjoy a free guided one-hour walk at the park at 1:00pm.  Explore the local ecosystems, animals and history.  This is a popular walk for birders to see some remarkable specimen in their natural habitats.  Bring your camera, comfy shoes, water, sunscreen and insect repellent.  Meet for the tour at the eastern side of parking lot #8.  Call for more information.
