All About Fall in South Florida

It might not be easy to believe from the weather outside, but the official beginning of Autumn 2015 is already here in South Florida. The biggest annual fall events in South Florida are right around the corner.  Just because South Florida is in the tropics and misses autumn colors and apple-picking doesn’t mean that we can't get a taste of fall fun! We do have our own way of celebrating this season. If you are itching to be pickin' there are several U-pick farms that will have veggies and strawberries to choose from...just no apples.  The entire family can celebrate fall with a pumpkin patch, costume contests, family photos, pet costume parades, cider donuts, as well as hayrides and campfires!  Pretend you're up north by snapping some memorable pumpkin patch photos --though the flip flops and shorts may be a dead giveaway you're in South Florida.

Many events will feature a pumpkin patch, kids' area, a corn maze, safe trick-or-treating, hayrides, live bands, lots of arts and craft vendors, and other Fall and Halloween fun.  Boogie down at a Halloween party, get creative with pumpkin decorating, get spooked at a not-so-scary haunted event, and so much more.  Kids and parents will find plenty to do with costume contests, face painting, bounce houses/amusement rides or even a GROSS exhibit at the Museum of Discovery & Science in Fort Lauderdale.  For those who are past the stage of frequent nightmares, perhaps try out some of the scarier events like Fright Nights at the South Florida Fairgrounds (for kids over 12) or Shriek Week at the Sugar Sand Park in Boca Raton.  Spooky tours on the nature trail will be held at several local parks or nature centers and there are many events for kids at malls, churches, and recreation centers.

Get spooked!:

For many, Fall in South Florida is the perfect time to enjoy the outdoors after our relentless summer humidity.  Try taking the kids camping, check out our article South Florida Camping with Kids. Not ready to get out the tent and sleeping bags but still want the outdoor fun?  Don't miss the Beachside Bonfires in Lake Worth or the campfires & hayrides at Broward parks this season.  Fall and Harvest Festivals with amusement rides, silly contests, pet and child costume parades and yummy foods will be held across the region over the months of October and November.

Looking for something different to do this fall?  Celebrate the diversity of South Florida with a cultural festival or celebration.  The Indian Festival of Lights known as Diwali will take place in Broward.  Pompano Beach will celebrate Brazilian culture at their Brazilian Festival oceanside.  There will also be Oktoberfest celebrations in Miami and Lantana (Palm Beach county) that draw large crowds.

For the millions of locals as well as out-of-town visitors that collectively take part in these events, the annual fall affairs represent a unique and special expression of what South Florida has to offer. This is the "season" that the snowbirds all flock to enjoy and it's an awesome time to be a resident of South Florida too. To really make things fun for your family, look for those events that feature a little something different to spice things up!  Maybe this will be the year you take on a corn maze or a haunted house together.
