Sugar Sand Park

Body

The city of Boca Raton's Sugar Sand Park located in southwest Boca Raton has every thing a family could want! We've been taking our boys to the park since they were able to crawl. We've never lived near by but it is definitely worth the trek. They host a free monthly Kindermusik class for the babies and young toddlers. In the same building is the Science Explorium which has an existing exhibit with an electric train, hot air balloon and a neat race car with power tools the children can play with safely. Once a quarter or so they also host a new science-related exhibit across the hall and will also change the art and science exhibits in the hallways. If you stop by the front office, you can pick up a copy of the city's Recreator magazine that is chock full of classes the entire family can participate in affordably. Outside is the wonderful $1 a ride carousel and the HUGE wooden playground. Caution: This playground has tons of nooks and crannies, tiny crawl spaces for kids, stairs, and other hazards to watching very small children well. I was unable to let my boys play at the playground for years without a 2nd or 3rd adult with me to keep track of them. Now that they are a little older, I can take them there by myself but it's very tricky to handle multiple small children in the larger part of the playground. There is a tiny tot lot in the center of the entire park but it is really too inconvenient (and it's got easy access to the street) to be used. The larger wooden structure has an area for little toddlers off to the far right but good luck corralling your kids in that area without them running up a ramp or scurrying out of sight! New at the park is an area in the middle rear of the bigger kids' side that consists of an electronic lights & sounds game as well as a long bar of percussion instruments to play with. As soon as you enter the playground the first thing straight ahead is the NEW (probably still being worked on) water area that has a nautical theme. It may be closed off until the summer so call ahead if you plan to do some splash play. Aside from the playgrounds, carousel, and Science Explorium, there are also sports fields around the grounds and a field house with basketball courts. The park definitely has enough to keep kids and adults of all ages active. I highly recommend making a trip to Sugar Sand Park for hours of family fun!
