Key West Shipwreck Museum

There has to be thousands of sights to see in southern Florida, but few come close to that of the amazing Key West Shipwreck Museum. Combining actors, artifacts and films to tell a story 400 years old of shipwreck salvage in the Florida Keys, this is a place for every member of the family. During the golden age of sailin, Key West waters were known as some of the most perilous in the world. Almost one ship per week would wreck somewhere along the Florida Reef during that time making salvaging a major business back then.  Visitors will be able to relive the life of wreckers as they fight storms and retell their adventurous tales. Presentations are every 20 minutes.

Just a few of the many things this museum has to offer are films with real shipwreck crews being interviewed, rare underwater footage of shipwrecks, recovered treasure and a family favorite, a 65 foot tall look out. The kids and history lovers alike will be happy to meet Asa Tift and hear his tales of the days more than 150 years ago. Surrounded by discovered booty in his warehouse he will amaze as he tells the story of just how all this treasure was found. Finally, when the whole family has had time to explore the entire museum there is a unique little restaurant at the entrance. Serving mainly vegetarian dishes, this little restaurant has a look similar to a pirates hangout with a modern cuisine.

The Shipwreck Museum is located at 1 Whitehead Street, Key West, Florida 33040 in Monroe county. If you're a local to Monroe county you will experience significant discounts during "Locals Day". All you need is proof of residency to qualify. The museum is open 365 days of the year and the hours are from 9:40am-5:00pm with the last show at 4:40pm.
