History Miami Museum

History Miami is a museum located in Miami Florida and is the premier cultural institution that represents the rich culture of Miami. The museum illustrates the rich history of Miami through exhibitions, publications, collections, research, city tours and education. In 2011, the museum joined the Smithsonian Institution Affiliations Program (SIAP) which allows the museum to share collections, resource programs and offer scholarships to South Florida residents.

History Miami Museum was first accredited by the American Alliance of Museums in the year 1979. However, the museum has been reaccredited three more times in the years 1987, 1997 and 2008. These accreditations have made the museum a world class museum and one of the only two history museums in Miami that meet professional standards.

The history of Florida is perfectly illustrated and demonstrated through exhibitions, artifacts and paintings which are evenly distributed and perfectly labeled inside the History Miami Museum. The collections of artifacts include a wide range of pre-Colombian pieces such as furniture, boats, clothing and religious objects. The museum has over 37,000 different types of artifacts which date back to the early 20th century. Archeological materials, which occupy over 550 cubic feet of the museum, are also available for studying.

Apart from offering different exhibitions to visitors, History Miami museum offers three different types of learning programs which encompass over 10,000 years of Miami history. These learning programs are school programs, educator resources as well as family and child-centered programs. The school program is entirely correlated to the state standards and includes historic site visits and classroom visit programs. The family and child programs bring together family fun days as well as overnight camping for the entire family. The educator resources offer a wide variety of workshops based on school curriculum all year round.

Tours around the museum are held and coordinated by highly qualified guides who are well aware of the region as well as the history of Miami. Tours can be done through boats, bikes and walks around the museum and town.

The museum is located in the Miami-Dade Cultural Centre and is open to the public from Monday to Saturday from 10am to 5pm and on Sundays from Noon to 5 pm. The museum is however closed in all public holidays. Be sure to wonder accross the courtyard and visit the large public library.  Kids will enjoy the large stepped water feature just outside the museum, maybe throw in a penny and make a wish!
